THE
CONCEPT OF INTELLIGENT BUILDING
According to Garry (2004) the
concept of intelligent building or intelligent homes, or Building Management
Systems (BMS) embraces several technologies, spanning institutional, domestic,
commercial, industrial, building control and management systems. The building
management system is central to intelligent building concept having as its
purpose the idea to monitor, control and optimize building management services
like lighting, heating, security, closed circuit Television (CCTV) access
control, entertainment systems, alarm system, audio-visual, climate control,
ventilation and filtration. It transcends knowing time of arrival, attendance
control of staff and their movement in work places.
Imagine a scenario where a press of
button on your cell phone triggers “I’m home” message to your building or home
as you approach your driveway. The, control system in the building receives the
signal or command, which will kick off series of pre-programmed sequence of
functions. The lights on the drive way, garage, entrance hallway, staircase and
kitchen turn on. The security system by now is disarmed which means opening of
garage door together with interior door of the garage that leads into the rest
of the house, adjusting of the air conditioner or preset temperature in the
temperate region, turning on of the audio system of the house with a favorite
tune, putting the television on at the sitting room and the bathroom water
drawn for a warm or cold bath as the case may be. Continuing, after the night’s
sleep, by 5.00am you wake up to the bible reading coming from the sound system
with a sonorous hymn at the background. By this time, the light in your bedroom
comes on with ‘fading’ effect to permit your waking up appropriately.
Meanwhile, the intruder/ burglary alarm system is de-activated since it is
morning and early morning visitors could be calling. Down there in the kitchen,
the coffee/tea machine turns on to make a drink, the curtains and blinds at the
ground floor opens with the heater in the bathroom turned on. During this time,
exercising machine is buzzing out an audible sound, calling you for exercise in
your gym or where it is kept.
No doubt, living in a building as
smart as this will automatically change people’s lives with systems that
automate simple tasks in every day living and quality of life will improve with
reduction of stress. The handicapped and incapacitated can live comfortably
without much assistance.
